The end of the Mayan calendar - December 21st 2012

What's Going To Happen On December 21, 2012 Or so Called Doomsday?!

Nasa Website

Q: Is there a planet or brown dwarf called Nibiru or Planet X or Eris that is approaching the Earth and threatening our planet with widespread destruction?
A: Nibiru and other stories about wayward planets are an Internet hoax. There is no factual basis for these claims. If Nibiru or Planet X were real and headed for an encounter with the Earth in 2012, astronomers would have been tracking it for at least the past decade, and it would be visible by now to the naked eye. Obviously, it does not exist. Eris is real, but it is a dwarf planet similar to Pluto that will remain in the outer solar system; the closest it can come to Earth is about 4 billion miles.

People have been spreading countless rumors about December 21, 2012, but they haven't exactly decided what is it going to be? hurricanes, earthquakes or Aliens maybe?
Well, let's examine the evidence.....Will the planets line up and impact the earth? Hmm, Nop. NASA stated that - there are no planetary alignments in the next few decades, Earth will not cross the galactic plane in 2012, and even if these alignments were to occur, their effects on the Earth would be negligible. Each December the Earth and sun align with the approximate center of the Milky Way Galaxy but that is an annual event of no consequence.
Maybe the sun is going to melt us or something?!! Naa, NASA said solar flares are not big enough to destroy the earth..
Hmmm, so what is it then, oh oh maybe the aliens are coming to invade the earth and turn us into dust with a splash of alienated laser?! don't be ridiculous! of course not, although some people are very convinced that area 52 exists.. Hmmm, maybe!
A giant space Godzilla is going to eat the earth in one bite!! Hehehe sorry, couldn't help myself but comment on the picture. Classic!
OK, I am beginning to understand now that the world is not going to end; No planet is going to crash, no sun flares predicted in 2012 and no aliens coming this year.. Hmmm, but I don't understand, how these rumors started anyway? and why people would make such rumors? Well, I think the idea of doomsday is a pure misunderstanding..
You see, the story started with claims that Nibiru ( a supposed planet discovered by the Sumerians) is headed toward the earth. The catastrophe was predicted to happen on May 2003! but when nothing happened, people got bored and made another bed time story; claiming that the doomsday is still on, and the date was moved forward to December 21, 2012 (apparently the aliens had a busy schedule, Duh!!)
Hmmm, Interesting, but why December 21?? why not December 23, 2012? heck it will make more sense, right?
Well.. actually there's an explanation for "why december 21, 2012?", it goes back to the ancient times.. This is a very interesting story as it will explain one of things, we are taking for granted.. Calendar! (but not the current calendar, sorry!)

The Mayans' Calendar

The mayans orginated in a region called Meso-america or middle america. This region is located between mexico and south america.
The great mayan history is divided into three periods:
  1. pre-classic 2000 B.C until A.D 300
  2. classic 300 until 900
  3. post-classic 900 until 1400s
The meso-americans were among the first cultures to ever record history. They began writing during the med pre-classic period, they recorded their civil event, calendars and astronomy knowledge.
The mayans had four different calendars: the Tzolkin calender, the Haab calender, the round calendar and the long count calender.
First off, I'll talk briefly about the Mayans' mathematic system, in order to understand how the calendar worked.

Mayans and Math

Maya numerals are a vigesimal (base twenty) numeral system, the numerals are made up of three symbols:
  • the shell shape = zero\
  • One dot = one unit
  • One bar = 5 units
Numbers after 19 were written vertically in the power of 20, For instance: thirty-four would be written (one dot -above- four dots and two bars) so it looks like this (see picture)
There are two numbers that held a great signifacance in the maya civilization, and those are 20 and 13. Number twenty represents the ten fingers and ten toes, and number 13 represents the major joints in the human body such as: neck, two shoulders, two elbows, two wrists, two hips, two knees, two ankles. These numbers were the basis of the tzolkin calendar.

The Tzolkin Calendar

If you haven't read What's going to happen on December 21, 2012 yet, please take a look at it, otherwise this isn't going to make much sense to you. Cheers
Anyway, The tzolkin or sacred calendar is the oldest cycle known in meso-america, dating back to at least 600 BC. It's believed that it was tied to a woman's birth cycle, which is one Tzolkin period or 260 days, it consists of a 13 days period, that rolls over 20 times over the 260 unique days (13x20=260).
OK, I want you to focus on this part.. The Mayans wanted to make each day unique; consequently they named the first 20 days in the calendar (see picture)..So the calendar goes like this: day no.1 Imix' - day no.2 Ik' - day no.3 Ak'b'al - until day no.13 B'en.
The 13 days period rolls back again at day no.1, but with the name of symbol no.14 Ix, day no.2 with the name of symbol no.15 Men, and day no.3 with the name of symbol no.16 Kb'..etc
Ok, for the sack of making things simple. Let's say, they had 20 months and 13 days in each one. To make each day in the calendar unique, they named only the first twenty days of the calendar (which means a month and a half). When the 13 days periods reaches the end (day no.13), it rolls over and start at day no.1 again, and when the 20 symbols reaches symbol no.20, it too rolls over again, and since they obviously don't roll back at the same time, it made each day in the calendar unique.

Please look at the picture, I simplified the calendar to better understand the whole process. Hope it clears it out for you..

Note: Each day in the calendar is unique, because the 20 named days cycle is not evenly divisible by the 13 days period.
The Mayans believed that each of the 20 named days has its own spirit, and its number presents its weakness and strength.
Despite its lovely function ( !! ), The tzolkin calendar wasn't quite accurate as it didn't measure the solar year ( The time it takes for the earth to complete one circle around the sun, which is our current calendar: 365 days, 5 hours, 48 minutes and 45.51 seconds), thus the Mayans decided to create a more accurate calendar.

The Haab Calendar

It's similar to our current Gregorian calendar, it also has 365 days. At first, It was comprised of 18 uinals (periods of 20 days) which is about 5 days short of a full solar year (18 x 20 = 360), so they added extra 5 days at the end of the year (18 x 20 + 5 = 365), the five days period wasn't a part of any uinal (month) - they called it "wayeb or uyaeb"; it was thought to be a very dangerous time as the Mayan believed the gods rested during that time, leaving the earth unprotected.
Note: In the haab calendar, they named the uinals (months) but not the days.
Each day in the calendar was numbered by its place in the uinal (month), and followed by the name of that particular uinal, each uinal starts with.zero and ends with no.19.
Example:
The first uinal was called POP, so it goes like this, 0 pop- 1 pop- 2 pop- 3 pop ...19pop, the second uinal was called UO: 0 uo- 1 uo- 2 uo- 3 uo...19 uo, the third uinal was called ZIP: 0 zip- 1zip- 2 zip- 3 zip...19 zip etc

The Calendar Round

The Mayans wanted to record more events on the long run, thus the haab calendar was joined with the tzolkin calendar; together they formed a 52 years cycle, and since there were 20 glyphs in tzolkin calendar, and 20 days per month of haab, they created 18980 unique days.
The Long Count Calendar
The Mayans created this calendar to record events for generation to come, unlike the Haab calendar, it was only 52 years cycle which didn't measure more than one generation..
The long count calendar is a non repeating calender, its great length consists of at least 5126 years - that's 13 baktuns (cycles). Each cycle lasts about 394 years. The Long Count calendar identifies a date by counting the number of days from a starting date 0.0.0.0.0 that is calculated to be August 11, 3114 BCE in the current Gregorian calendar.
The long count calendar is represented as a five unit system of ascending cycles:
  • One k'in = one day
  • Uinal = a period of twenty days (20 kin)
  • Tun = 360days (18 uinals)
  • K'atun = 7200 days (20 tun)
  • Bak'tun = 144,000 days (20 k'atun)
For instance, today's date (12/07/2012) in the long count calendar is 12.19. 19. 9. 18. Currently we are in the 12th baktun, and will end at December 21, 2012, that's 13.0.0.0.0 in the long count calendar.
If we take today's date (12/07/2012) in the long count calendar 12.19.19.9.18, working from left to right: No.18 represents the kins - No.9 represents the uinals - No.19 represents the tuns - No.19 represents the k'atuns, and finally No.12 represents the bak'tuns.

It's Meant For Celebration!

Turning to the13th b'aktun is meant to be celebrated; just like we celebrated the beginning of the new millennium, the Mayans would have celebrated the new b'aktun the same way.
December 21, 2012 is going to be like any other day, there are no writings or evidence that indicates otherwise.
So, please.. Make plans for the long run; because you aren't going anywhere!
